The runbook span table, the phase-4 task list and the data reference all
conflicted: this branch had already expanded them with the open-phase,
avalanche and proposal-prefix attributes. Keep this branch's tables and
apply the close-time rename to their rows.
The close_time entry in ledger_history_mismatch_total{reason} is a metric
label value, not the span attribute, and is deliberately unchanged.
The consensus and ledger attribute tables conflicted: this branch had
already rewritten both, adding the open-phase and avalanche attributes and
correcting tx_count/tx_failed to sit on tx.apply alone. Keep this branch's
tables and apply the close-time rename to their rows, rather than taking
either side whole.
The emitted keys are close_time_ripple_epoch_s,
parent_close_time_ripple_epoch_s and close_time_self_ripple_epoch_s.
Update the consensus.accept.apply attribute tables and the close-time
attribute descriptions to match.
The Phase 4a span table had no consensus.phase.open row at all and listed
only three attributes for consensus.establish. Add the row, the eight
attributes added on this branch, and the two label-valued ones to the
attribute inventory.
Leaves the pre-existing dotted names in the consensus.round row alone; they
predate the underscore convention and are not part of this change.
The reference docs had drifted from the code in ways that break the reader
rather than merely misinform: PromQL examples that return no data, a rollback
flag that is a no-op, a sampling knob that does not exist, and two span parents
that moved. Code is treated as the truth throughout; where the code is the
defective side, the doc now records it as a known issue instead of describing
the bug as intent.
Renames the docs missed: histogram names gain the exporter's unit suffix
(ios_latency_milliseconds_bucket and four siblings), ledger_history_mismatch
gains _total, the StatsD-era quantile label gives way to le buckets,
rpc.request becomes rpc.http_request, traces_spanmetrics_calls_total becomes
span_calls_total, and the nine dotted xrpl.* span attributes are recorded as
renamed rather than left as live keys.
Re-parenting: consensus.update_positions and consensus.check are children of
consensus.establish, not of consensus.round.
Units and labels: state_accounting_*_duration is microseconds, not seconds;
cache_metrics label values are case-sensitive; object_count carries demangled
C++ type names. Nodestore read and write latency stays microseconds -- the
nanosecond accumulator change did not move the exported unit.
Adds what shipped but was undocumented: the ledger.acquire span, seven
consensus.round events, twelve span attributes, node_writes_duration_us, the
7-day validation-agreement window, the TxQ admission and reduce-relay metric
families, metrics_endpoint, and the phase-10 validation workflow.
Corrects claims that never held: 10% head sampling (it is fixed at 100%),
configurable redaction (it is unconditional), -DXRPL_ENABLE_TELEMETRY=OFF
(the flag is -Dtelemetry=OFF, default ON), FindOpenTelemetry.cmake and the
xrpl_telemetry target (neither exists), Promtail and a StatsD exporter in the
pipeline (neither exists), and Loki stream selection on job= (only
service_name is a stream label).
Phase 9 is marked complete, its provisioned alerting is attributed to the
branch that shipped it, and Phase 11 stays at zero except the one prerequisite
its code closes. Counts are reconciled repo-wide: 41 emitted span families,
15 dashboards on disk with 14 asserted, 13 alert rules in 5 groups.
Hardens the gate that let this drift through: Rule E of the naming check now
covers the reference docs, its allow-dotted marker is key-scoped and warns on
stale or empty use, a missing checked file is reported instead of silently
skipped, the test suite runs in CI, and doc paths trigger the check.
C++ and CMake changes are comment-only: three MetricsRegistry instrument names,
eight OTelCollector claims of a metric-name prefix that formatName never adds,
and the telemetry option's inverted default.
These changes were developed on the phase-10 branch but belong to content this
branch and its upstreams introduced. Carrying them on phase-10 made its PR diff
report churn in files phase-10 does not own, and left each PR claiming a scope
that did not match its contents.
Moved here from phase-10 (identical content, no functional change):
- Dashboards: all 14 existing boards plus the new log-derived-insights board.
- Docs: telemetry-runbook.md (minus the workload/benchmark sections, which
describe phase-10 tooling) and the new telemetry-glossary.md.
- Grafana Cloud + Alloy export path: collector config, compose override, the
two .env examples and alloy/config.alloy.
- Local stack: otel-collector-config.yaml gains sub-millisecond and
second-scale spanmetrics buckets, pins unit=ms, and promotes
close_time_correct; integration-test.sh and TESTING.md follow.
- Node configs: exported_instance -> service_instance_id in comments; the
mainnet sample now logs at warning to bound log volume.
- Metrics code: Telemetry.cpp builds the metrics pipeline in the constructor
via initMetrics() so the global MeterProvider is published before any
subsystem creates a beast::insight instrument, and the histogram view keeps
each instrument's own name instead of collapsing them under one series.
MetricsRegistry gains a last_close_time gauge and skips negative job-queue
durations. OTelCollector drops an unused accessor.
- Naming CI: xrpl_work_item joins EXTERNAL_INFRA_LABELS and Rule E accepts the
dotted perf-iac resource-attribute form. This must travel with the
dashboards and runbook that reference those labels, or the rules fail.
- Doxygen input glob no longer recurses dot-directories.
Sections describing phase-10 tooling stay on phase-10 and keep their
"Future Enhancement" / "Planned, not yet implemented" markers here; phase-10
removes those markers when it lands the tooling.
Move the standalone External Dashboard Parity design spec out of
docs/superpowers/ (which the project guidelines say not to create) and into
an appendix of OpenTelemetryPlan/06-implementation-phases.md, so the phase
plan is self-contained. Repoint the 10 "Source" links in the phase 3/4/7
task lists to the new appendix anchor.

Three entries in Phase4_taskList.md annotated dotted attribute keys
(`xrpl.consensus.round`, `round_id`, `ledger_id`) as "(kept — rule 5)". That
is wrong: rule 5 keeps SPAN NAMES dotted, not attribute keys — the code emits
the underscore form (consensus_round, consensus_round_id, consensus_ledger_id)
per ConsensusSpanNames.h. Remove the false justification; the dotted form in
this task list remains as the illustrative-readability form documented in the
note at the top of the file.

Bring phase-3 forward into phase 4 (consensus tracing). Phase 4 introduces
ConsensusSpanNames.h (and already did the trusted→proposal/validation rename
and underscore-attr conversion in ffc197b914).
Conflict resolution (reviewed by a code-review agent before commit):
- 02-design-decisions.md §2.4 Consensus Attributes: merge-both — kept phase-3's
underscore table form AND folded in phase-4's richer "Phase 4a" attribute set
(round_id, ledger_id, trace_strategy, converge/establish/disputes counts,
agree/disagree counts, threshold_percent, consensus_result, mode_old/new),
each mapped to its authoritative ConsensusSpanNames.h constant. Dropped the
planned-but-unimplemented proposers_agreed/proposers_total (no code constant;
agree_count/disagree_count serve that role).
- SpanGuardFactory.cpp: kept phase-4's explanatory comment about why a libxrpl
test uses literal keys, plus the converted command/rpc_status keys.
Naming check passes (100 keys across 8 *SpanNames.h headers, including consensus).

Bring phase-2 forward into phase 3 (transaction tracing). Phase 3 introduces
TxSpanNames.h, TxQSpanNames.h, and TxApplySpanNames.h.
Conflict resolution:
- TxQ.cpp: kept phase-3's txq_span-based instrumentation (phase-2 had none).
Dropped the orphaned `NumberSO{... fixUniversalNumber}` line — develop's
#5962 (Retire fixUniversalNumber) removed that symbol repo-wide; the
conflict block had carried one stale copy that would not compile.
- 05/08/OpenTelemetryPlan.md: dropped the deleted 04-code-samples / POC_taskList
references (carried from phase-2), kept phase-3's new secure-OTel.md doc rows,
section, and Mermaid node/edge/style. Config code block -> prose; merged the
secure-OTel hardening pointer with the authoritative-config prose.
- Phase3_taskList.md: removed the "dotted keys for readability" note that came
from phase-2 — phase 3 already uses the underscore keys.
Reviewed by code-review agents: telemetry instrumentation intact, naming check
green (47 keys across 7 *SpanNames.h headers), no conflict markers.

The Phase3/4/5 task lists show attribute keys in the older dotted
`xrpl.<domain>.<field>` form because that mirrors how a fully qualified
attribute reads in a Tempo trace view, which keeps the planning prose readable.
Add a note to each clarifying that the implemented keys follow the underscore
convention in CONTRIBUTING.md and that the *SpanNames.h constants (enforced by
the CI naming check) are the single source of truth — so the dotted form here
is illustrative, not the literal key.

Fix quorum attribute to use actual validator quorum instead of proposer
count, add missing ConsensusState::Expired handling in haveConsensus()
span, move ConsensusSpanNames.h to xrpld/consensus/ to resolve
levelization cycle, remove unused constants, enrich proposal receive
span with sequence, and correct stale documentation references.

Update Phase4_taskList.md and 06-implementation-phases.md to reflect
completed implementation of all remaining Phase 4/4a tasks (4.2-4.6,
4a.5, 4a.6, 4a.8). Update exit criteria and summary tables.

Record the close time voting threshold and consensus state on
consensus.update_positions and consensus.check spans:
- xrpl.consensus.close_time_threshold: the avCT_CONSENSUS_PCT (75%)
threshold required for close time agreement
- xrpl.consensus.have_close_time_consensus: whether validators
reached close time consensus in this iteration
These attributes enable dashboards to show how the close time
voting process converges (or stalls) across consensus iterations.

Instrument the consensus subsystem with OpenTelemetry spans covering
the full round lifecycle: round start, establish phase, proposal send,
ledger close, position updates, consensus check, accept, validation
send, and mode changes.
Key design choices adapted from the original Phase 4 implementation
to the new SpanGuard factory pattern introduced in Phase 3:
- Add SpanGuard::hashSpan() for category-gated hash-derived trace IDs
(consensus round spans share trace_id across validators via ledger hash)
- Add SpanGuard::addEvent() overload with key-value attribute pairs
(used for dispute.resolve events during position updates)
- Add ConsensusSpanNames.h with compile-time span name constants
following the colocated *SpanNames.h pattern from Phase 3
- Add consensusTraceStrategy config option ("deterministic"/"attribute")
for cross-node trace correlation strategy selection
- Use SpanGuard::linkedSpan() for follows-from relationships between
consecutive rounds and cross-thread validation spans
- Use SpanGuard::captureContext() for thread-safe context propagation
from consensus thread to jtACCEPT worker thread
Spans produced: consensus.round, consensus.proposal.send,
consensus.ledger_close, consensus.establish, consensus.update_positions,
consensus.check, consensus.accept, consensus.accept.apply,
consensus.validation.send, consensus.mode_change
