The pinned collector warns on every start that "spanmetrics" is a deprecated
alias for "span_metrics". Rename the connector, its pipeline references and
the prose that names it.
The derived metric names are untouched. They come from the connector's
`namespace` setting rather than its component name, so occurrences inside a
metric name such as traces_spanmetrics_calls_total are deliberately left as
they are; renaming those would break every span panel. The rename is applied
only to the bare word, never where it is joined to a metric name by
underscores.
This branch introduces the connector, so the change belongs here.
requireReadableFile proved a path readable with getFileContents, which
loads the whole file into a std::string and then drops it. One of the
three paths it checks is tls_client_key, so a private key was loaded to
answer a question that does not need its contents. It now stats the
path, rejects anything that is not a regular file, and opens it without
reading. The message shape is unchanged:
"[telemetry] <key> cannot be read: <path> - <reason>".
A path naming a directory used to escape as an ios failure from the
stream buffer, naming neither the config key nor the path. It is now
rejected as "not a regular file" with both named. The new test covers
that case; it fails against the old implementation and against a copy
with the file-type branch removed.
The runbook's quick start and disable sections both told the reader to
run "cmake --preset default". No presets file is tracked, and the only
preset Conan generates is conan-release, so each of those steps failed
on its first command. Replaced with the flow BUILD.md documents, and
noted that telemetry is the current default while still passing the
flags.
One conflict, in docs/telemetry-runbook.md: both sides had independently
corrected the same consensus_round_id example. This branch kept the pipe form,
which Tempo rejects as a parse error; upstream moved the predicate inside the
braces, which parses and returns data. Upstream's query is kept, with this
branch's note that the value is the previous ledger sequence plus one.
The OTLP/HTTP exporter selects TLS from the endpoint URL scheme alone
(HttpSslOptions in the pinned SDK matches "https:" exactly), so a client
certificate handed to it alongside an http:// traces_endpoint is loaded and
never presented. The parser checked the cert/key pairing, use_tls and file
readability, but never the scheme, and the default traces_endpoint is plain
HTTP. makeTelemetrySetup() now requires traces_endpoint to start with
"https://" whenever tls_client_cert is set, including when the key is left
at its default.
Nothing asserted the client options reaching the exporter, so a swapped
certificate and key would have passed every test. Move the options mapping
into makeTraceExporterOptions() and assert it at that boundary with
distinct certificate and key paths, plus a one-way-TLS control and a
use_tls=0 control. One case runs the whole path from a [telemetry] section.
Runbook and example-config fixes:
- tx.included is emitted per transaction of the agreed consensus set,
before buildLCL() applies anything, so it is a superset of the accepted
ledger rather than proof of inclusion.
- the dispute.resolve query used the descendant operator, but the event is
on the consensus.update_positions span itself, so it matched nothing.
- the exhausted-retries query asked for txq_status="retried" with
retries_remaining=0, which cannot occur: the attribute is stamped before
the attempt and the retried branch only runs while retries are left.
Exhaustion is txq_status="failed" with a zero count.
- consensus_round_id is an int64, so the two queries comparing it to a
quoted string matched nothing.
- note that consensus_trace_strategy=random is experimental and not used.
- note that a trailing "| attr = value" is rejected by current Tempo;
attribute filters belong inside the braces.
The emitted keys carry the unit and epoch suffix. Update the consensus
and ledger attribute tables and the ledger.build span row to match.
The Close Time Drift panel row is left alone: phase-7 removes that whole
table, so editing it here would only conflict on the way forward.
The consensus.accept.apply row listed close_time, parent_close_time and
close_time_self. The emitted keys carry the unit and epoch suffix, so
update the row to match.
The rename arrived from phase-1b by merge; the runbook still told
operators to set `endpoint`, which the parser no longer reads. Updates
the Quick Start ini block and the Configuration Reference row.
No metrics_endpoint row is added: this branch exports no metrics, so
documenting the key here would describe something the code ignores.
Review feedback on the testing guide:
- rm -rf targeted data/, but this config writes under docker/telemetry/data/,
so teardown did nothing and a second run reused the old NuDB and SQLite
state. Corrected at both sites, including the Test 2 keygen node, which
launches with the same config.
- The standalone span table said consensus.* does not fire. It does:
ledger_accept drives a simulated round, so consensus.round, .phase.open,
.ledger_close, .accept and .accept.apply all appear. Only .establish,
.update_positions, .check, .proposal.* , .validation.receive and
.mode_change cannot. The test intro claimed the same thing and now agrees
with the table.
- Three blocks duplicated content the file already had. Test 1 now points at
the shared Verification Queries section as Test 2 already did, and the
Test 2 submit block checks engine_result like Test 1 does.
- The numbered step list was a copy of the script's own Step N headers and had
drifted by four entries, so it now points at those headers instead.
Also corrects the runbook's ledger and peer span tables against the code:
ledger.build was credited with tx_count and tx_failed, which tx.apply sets,
and was missing its three close-time attributes; peer.validation.receive was
missing ledger_hash and full_validation. The five source line numbers in those
two tables were stale, so they now name the file only, as the other nineteen
rows do.
close_time_avalanche_state is new; the row also did not say that the other
three are rewritten on every convergence iteration, so a reader could not tell
that the exported value is the last one rather than a series.
This row is byte-identical on phases 5 through 10, so it is edited here and
merges forward. The consensus.phase.open row is empty until phase 9 and is
updated there instead.
Bring the three documentation surfaces in line with the new parse-time check:
- The @throws clause on makeTelemetrySetup now names the third failure
condition and records that an empty path is skipped.
- cfg/xrpld-example.cfg states, under all three TLS keys, that with enabled=1
and use_tls=1 a path that does not exist or cannot be read stops startup. The
tls_ca_cert wording still says that empty selects the system CA store, since
only a path that is set is checked.
- The runbook troubleshooting entry gains a third bullet for the "cannot be
read" message, whose remedy is the path or its permissions rather than the
certificate and key pairing.
Documentation only; no behaviour change.
makeTelemetrySetup() rejects a contradictory [telemetry] mutual-TLS
setup by throwing, but it is called from ApplicationImp's
member-initializer list. A try/catch in the constructor body cannot
reach a throw from there, and nothing further up the stack caught it
either, so a config mistake reached std::terminate: the default handler
printed a terminate dump and raised SIGABRT, leaving a core file
instead of a startup error.
Catch std::exception around makeApplication() in run(), report the
reason on stderr and return -1, so the failure is a clean non-zero exit
with a message an operator can act on. Only the construction is
wrapped. setup() starts subsystems whose shutdown order is delicate and
is left outside deliberately, because unwinding a half-started
Application would skip the normal stop sequence.
Gate both validation guards on enabled. A node with telemetry switched
off previously refused to start over certificate paths that nothing
would read.
Document both throws on makeTelemetrySetup(), state in
cfg/xrpld-example.cfg and the configuration reference that a partial
mutual-TLS setup is fatal and that the checks apply only when
enabled=1, and add a runbook troubleshooting entry keyed on the two
error messages.
Tests cover both guards with the message asserted so the two are told
apart, both enabled=0 paths, and the default plaintext configuration.
The integration test asserted `rippled_job_count`, which never reports any
series, so that check always failed. `JobQueue` registers the gauge as
`makeGauge("job_count")`, but `Application.cpp` passes it
`collectorManager_->group("jobq")`, so the emitted StatsD name is
`jobq.job_count` and the exported Prometheus name is
`<prefix>_jobq_job_count`.
Corrected the same name in two runbook tables that also dropped the `jobq`
segment. `09-data-collection-reference.md` already had it right, which is why
the two documents disagreed.
Routed here rather than to the phase-10 PR where it was reported: the wrong
name is present in `integration-test.sh` on every branch from phase 6
onward, and this is the branch that introduces the file.
Left alone deliberately:
- `statsd-node-health.json` still queries the old name, but that dashboard is
deleted at phase 7 in favour of `node-health.json`
- `06-implementation-phases.md` names `job_count`, which is accurate as the
code-level makeGauge argument rather than the exported metric name
The integration test's span assertions never actually ran. check_span()
built a Tempo /api/search call with --data-urlencode but no -G, so curl
POSTed the params as a body; Tempo answers 200 and ignores the query, so
every span name looked present. Verified against a live Tempo 2.9.4: the
buggy form returns the store's total trace count for any name, including
"zzz.does.not.exist"; with -G a real name returns 1 and a bogus one 0.
Fixed alongside it: the RPC check asserted "rpc.request", which is never
emitted (ServerHandler.cpp builds "rpc.http_request"). These two had to
change together, since -G turns the bogus name from a silent pass into a
hard failure.
Also in the script: a consensus timeout logged two failures and counted
two, because a post-loop else re-reported what the timeout branch had
already reported; and three unguarded curl calls aborted the whole script
under set -euo pipefail, making the ACCOUNT_ZERO fallback dead code with
no cleanup. Guarded the curls and wired an EXIT trap to the existing
cleanup(). The trap deliberately fires only before the summary, so a
completed run still leaves the stack up as the header documents.
Docs corrections, all re-derived from code:
- span inventory heading 35 -> 38, attribute heading 83 -> 89 rows
(78 unique keys), and the section 6 header table now carries the
missing TxApplySpanNames.h row so its columns sum to the same figures
- two stale paths: ConsensusSpanNames.h is under include/xrpl/consensus/,
TxSpanNames.h under src/xrpld/telemetry/
- consensus_round_id is int64, not string (RCLConsensus.cpp sets
prevLgr.seq() + 1); the runbook's TraceQL examples now use a numeric
literal instead of an unparseable bare <round_id>
- state-accounting duration gauges are cumulative MICROSECONDS, not
seconds (NetworkOPs.cpp declares std::chrono::microseconds and
publishes dur.count() raw)
- sampling_ratio is not a config key; head sampling is fixed at 1.0 and
the shipped collector has no tail sampling, so the caveat was rewritten
- the plan blurb referenced Jaeger; this stack is Tempo
Grafana renders `unit: "ops"` as the literal string "ops/s", so every
rate panel read as "operations per second" regardless of what it
actually counted. `Ledger Build Rate` showed "0.258 ops/s" where the
value is one ledger every 3.9s -- the number was right, the unit was
meaningless.
Replace the generic units with Grafana custom-suffix units naming the
quantity, following the existing `suffix:/hr` and `si:drops` precedent
in this repo. Nine of these are `stat` panels with no axis, so the unit
string was the only text a reader ever saw.
Also switch the two trusted/untrusted piecharts and the transaction
path piechart from rate() to increase(): a per-slice "per second"
reading is not a share of a total, counts in the window are.
Queries are unchanged apart from those three; the values were already
correct.
Alongside, bring the touched panels up to the dashboard guidelines:
tooltip mode/sort/max-height, 30-minute null spanning, and axis labels
in title case. Hoist the stat panels above the fold on
ledger-operations and rpc-performance.
Panels that a later branch in this chain removes are deliberately left
alone -- fixing them would only add merge conflicts.
Add current_ledger_seq / current_ledger_hash to the tx.process, tx.receive,
and txq.enqueue span-reference rows, correct the txq.enqueue parent note
(parents to tx.process on the submission path via explicit context; a root on
the open-ledger rebuild path), and add a "Correlating a transaction to the
ledger it was worked on" recipe joining the txID-keyed tx/txq spans to the
ledger trace via current_ledger_seq.

These inbound peer-message entry points (kConsumer) used span(), which
inherits whatever span is active on the peer thread — including a leaked
tx.receive scope — so validations/proposals were wrongly nested under
unrelated transaction traces. rootSpan() starts a fresh trace root.

Replace the TxQ Accept Status piechart on the Transaction Overview
dashboard with a state-timeline showing each node's applied fraction of
TxQ accepts (applied / applied+failed) over time, colored by threshold
(green >=0.9, yellow >=0.7, red below). Remove the now-orphaned
txq_status template variable (the piechart was its only consumer) and
document the panel in the telemetry runbook.

- Add PathFinding Spans section to the runbook Span Reference and
remove the incorrect "not emitted / later-phase" annotations:
pathfind.request/compute/discover/update_all are emitted since
Phase 2 (upstream of Phase 5).
- Runbook label names use the bare spanmetrics dimensions
(command, rpc_status, local, consensus_mode); fix stale docs.
- 05-configuration-reference: note tls_client_cert/key require use_tls=1.
- TelemetryConfig: reject mTLS cert paths when use_tls=0 so telemetry
is not silently sent in plaintext.

Same operator-facing cleanup as the RPC/transaction/consensus headings: the
runbook documents the running system, not the development phase that added
each span. Strip the "(Phase 6)" suffixes from the Ledger and Peer span
reference headings.

The operator runbook is for people running OpenTelemetry against a node, not
a record of the internal development phases. Strip the "(Phase N)" suffixes
from the span-reference headings and replace the personal-name example
service.name value with a generic one.

Make dashboard uids bare domain names (uid == filename stem) and update
doc references. Grafana links/bookmarks to the old uids will need
refreshing.

Add a Deployment Tiers section covering the four filtering dimensions
(node, service, network, environment), who owns each attribute, the
collector's upsert-vs-insert rule, per-tier collector values, and how the
tier labels reach metrics. This is the operator-facing home for the
deployment-tier feature.

The consensus.proposal.receive and consensus.validation.receive spans record
the trust flag under proposal_trusted / validation_trusted (shared with the
peer spans of the same message type), not a bare `trusted`. Update the span
reference table to match.
Bring phase-4 forward into phase 5 (docs & deployment). Phase 5 owns the
operator runbook (docs/telemetry-runbook.md).
Conflict resolution:
- 05-configuration-reference.md: took phase-4's code-block-free prose for the
config-parser section; the mTLS options (tls_client_cert/tls_client_key)
remain documented in the §5.1.2 options table.
Phase-5-owned naming fix:
- docs/telemetry-runbook.md: converted 20 dotted xrpl.<domain>. attribute keys
in the Span Reference tables to the underscore convention (tx_hash, peer_id,
ledger_seq, consensus_mode/round/round_id/ledger_id, tx_id). Span NAMES stay
dotted (rule 5). `trusted` left as-is — verified it matches the code constant
ConsensusSpanNames.h (the proposal_trusted/validation_trusted split is a
separate, not-yet-applied code change).
End-to-end reconciliation: every span-attribute token in the runbook (L5) now
matches an L1 *SpanNames.h constant. The xrpl_<domain>_<field> tokens are the
spanmetrics-derived Prometheus labels (documented mapping), not span attrs.

Head sampling is now fixed at 1.0 and not configurable. Drop the
sampling_ratio config row and redirect volume-reduction guidance to
collector-side tail sampling. trace_peer=0 stays as the high-volume opt-out.

Reflect the new on-by-default behavior in the config defaults table. The
volume-reduction guidance (High memory usage, Production mainnet tuning)
intentionally keeps trace_peer=0 as an opt-out recommendation for
high-traffic deployments.

Wire the apply-pipeline stage spans (tx.preflight, tx.preclaim,
tx.transactor) added on phase-3 through the observability stack so the
spanmetrics connector produces per-stage RED metrics without any native
instruments.
- collector: add the `stage` dimension to the spanmetrics connector so
the three stages split into separate metric series (3 bounded values).
- dashboard: add a "Tx Apply Pipeline" section to transaction-overview
with rate, p95 latency, and failure-rate panels grouped by stage, plus
a `stage` template variable. Panels follow the existing config (node
filter, exported_instance legends, Title Case, axis labels).
- The failure panel filters ter_result != tesSUCCESS rather than span
status, because a failing ter code completes the span normally — only
thrown exceptions set an error status. This matches the existing
"Transaction Results by Type" panel convention.
- docs: document the spans, attributes, and stage dimension in the data
collection reference and runbook, including the sampling caveat that
span-derived metrics inherit tracer head-sampling and undercount at
sampling_ratio < 1.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The spanmetrics connector dimension was `xrpl.consensus.mode`, but the code
emits the span attribute under the bare key `consensus_mode` (matching every
other dimension after the Phase 6 rename). The mismatch left the
`xrpl_consensus_mode` Prometheus label empty, so the Consensus Health
"Consensus Mode Over Time" panel and the `$consensus_mode` template variable
(which filters every panel) matched no live series.
- otel-collector-config.yaml: dimension `xrpl.consensus.mode` -> `consensus_mode`
- consensus-health.json: 11 label refs `xrpl_consensus_mode` -> `consensus_mode`
(the `$consensus_mode` Grafana variable name is unchanged)
- telemetry-runbook.md: refresh the stale spanmetrics label table to the bare
names actually emitted (command/rpc_status/consensus_mode/local/
proposal_trusted/validation_trusted), fix dotted->bare attribute names in
span tables and TraceQL examples (tx_hash, ledger_seq, consensus_round_id,
consensus_ledger_id, consensus_round, tx_id event attr), correct the
consensus_round_id query to int (not quoted string), and fix the
load_type value query ("exception_rpc" -> "exceptioned RPC").
Verified against the live stack: Tempo span tags confirm bare attribute keys
(consensus_mode, ledger_seq, tx_hash, ...); the populated xrpl_consensus_mode
series in Prometheus is stale retained data from an older build.

Resolve runbook conflict: keep both phase 6 ledger/peer span tables
AND new insights/sample queries section from the enrichment work.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds comprehensive "Insights and Sample Queries" section showing operators
what questions they can answer with the newly-added span attributes:
- Transaction workflow analysis (filter by tx_type, fee, ter_result)
- TxQ health (txq_status, ledger_changed)
- RPC debugging (is_batch, request_payload_size, load_type)
- PathFinding performance (dest_currency, num_source_assets)
- Consensus health (consensus_state, is_bow_out, disputes_count)
- Cross-subsystem correlation examples
Also updates all span reference tables with the new attributes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- RPC Spans table: `rpc.request` was documented but the code actually emits
`rpc.http_request`. Listed the actual emitted names
(`rpc.http_request`, `rpc.ws_upgrade`, `rpc.ws_message`, `rpc.process`)
and their parent/child relationship.
- Drop `:<line>` suffixes from Source File columns in both RPC and
Transaction span tables. Line numbers drift with every refactor; the
filename is enough for operators to grep.
- Summary table: replace the never-emitted `rpc.request` row with the real
entry points so `span_name=` filters in PromQL / TraceQL match.
