consensus_trace_strategy was read as a std::string and compared against the
literal "attribute" in startRoundTracing(), while the runbook documented
"deterministic" and "random". The documented value "random" therefore fell
through to the default and did nothing.
Parse the setting once into ConsensusTraceStrategy, so the consensus code
branches on a type. The accepted spellings are now "deterministic" and
"random"; anything else fails at startup instead of silently defaulting.
The behaviour behind the old "attribute" name is unchanged and is now
reached by "random".
Document consensus_trace_strategy in xrpld-example.cfg, stating that
"random" is experimental and not used: it gives each node its own trace id,
so one round arrives as one trace per node.
Also state on the tx.included event that it covers the agreed consensus set
before the ledger is built, so it is a superset of the accepted ledger.
Three conflicts, all composed rather than resolved by taking a side:
- TelemetryConfig.cpp: phase-6 kept networkTypeFromId file-local with
[[nodiscard]]; phase-7 had relocated it to public scope for
Application.cpp. Kept phase-7's relocation, so one definition remains.
The [[nodiscard]] survives on the declaration in Telemetry.h.
- Telemetry.cpp x2: phase-7 added getMeter overrides, phase-6 added
[[nodiscard]] to the startSpan below them. Kept both, and put
[[nodiscard]] on getMeter too.
- TESTING.md: phase-7 had the right metric name (span_calls_total, which
the spanmetrics namespace produces) but the wrong label. Its
xrpl.rpc.command appears nowhere else in the branch; the attribute is
bare `command`, which is what the dashboards query. Took phase-7's
metric with the correct label.
Both signalEndpoint call sites follow the renamed member. signalEndpoint
itself is left in place: removing it and adding metrics_endpoint is a
design change, not part of propagating a rename.
Two conflicts, both composed rather than taking a side.
SpanGuard.h: phase-4 added the followsFrom parameter and its @param block;
phase-3 added the @return line. Kept both.
Telemetry.cpp: phase-4 added getConsensusTraceStrategy() immediately above
getTracer()'s return type, where phase-3 added [[nodiscard]]. Kept both, in
both implementation classes.
getInstance(), getTracer(), both startSpan() overloads and networkTypeFromId()
return values that a caller must use. A discarded startSpan() result destroys
the returned span immediately, so the span opens and closes with no content.
Six methods in Telemetry.h already carried the attribute, on the base and on
every override. The new attributes follow that: the overrides in Telemetry.cpp
and NullTelemetry.cpp get it too, because [[nodiscard]] is not inherited and a
call bound to the derived type would otherwise be unchecked.
No caller anywhere in the chain discards any of these results.
Two conflicts, both in the telemetry include blocks.
SpanGuard.h: kept the union. The incoming side moves <memory> inside the
telemetry guard and adds <type_traits>; this branch adds <initializer_list>,
<utility> and the protocol::TraceContext forward declaration. Guarding
<memory> is correct here: the only std::shared_ptr uses are SpanContext's
member and constructor, both inside the guard, and SpanGuardHandle is a
template parameter name rather than a smart-pointer typedef.
NullTelemetry.cpp: took only the incoming guarded Journal.h block. The
incoming hunk also carried <memory> and <utility>, which this branch already
includes below the guarded OpenTelemetry block; taking them as well would
have tripped readability-duplicate-include.
NullTelemetry overrides the other OTel virtuals behind the telemetry guard so
it stays concrete in both configurations, but getMeter was added to the base
without a matching override. That leaves the class abstract in a telemetry-on
build, which compiles today only because its sole instantiation sits behind
#ifndef. Anyone constructing one with telemetry on gets an abstract-class
error pointing at the base, not at the missing override.
Return a NoopMeter from a function-local static, mirroring getTracer.
With telemetry compiled out, <string_view> in Telemetry.h and <memory> in
SpanGuard.h are named only by declarations that are themselves guarded, so
clang-tidy's include-cleaner reports them unused and warnings-as-errors fails
the build. NullTelemetry.cpp has the mirror problem: it names beast::Journal
only in the compiled-out makeTelemetry(), reaching the type transitively.
Guard each include to match the configuration that uses it, and correct three
comments that overstated what the empty destructors cost.
Bring the 5 telemetry files introduced on this branch to the enforced
house Doxygen style (/** alone, ' * ' continuation prefix, no single-line
blocks) so the check-doxygen-style hook passes under CI's --all-files run.
Comment-only: code is byte-identical after comment stripping (verified).
Also regenerate levelization results: the committed ordering.txt carried
stale 'xrpl.telemetry > xrpld.consensus/rpc' edges that the current include
graph no longer produces.

- Add [[nodiscard]] to getConsensusTraceStrategy, getYays, getNays
- Add missing <string>, SpanGuard.h, SpanNames.h includes
- Fix widening cast placement (cast before arithmetic, not after)
- Replace nested ternary with lambda for const dir variable
- Add braces to if/else-if chains in Consensus.h
- Concatenate nested namespaces in ConsensusSpanNames.h

Instrument the consensus subsystem with OpenTelemetry spans covering
the full round lifecycle: round start, establish phase, proposal send,
ledger close, position updates, consensus check, accept, validation
send, and mode changes.
Key design choices adapted from the original Phase 4 implementation
to the new SpanGuard factory pattern introduced in Phase 3:
- Add SpanGuard::hashSpan() for category-gated hash-derived trace IDs
(consensus round spans share trace_id across validators via ledger hash)
- Add SpanGuard::addEvent() overload with key-value attribute pairs
(used for dispute.resolve events during position updates)
- Add ConsensusSpanNames.h with compile-time span name constants
following the colocated *SpanNames.h pattern from Phase 3
- Add consensusTraceStrategy config option ("deterministic"/"attribute")
for cross-node trace correlation strategy selection
- Use SpanGuard::linkedSpan() for follows-from relationships between
consecutive rounds and cross-thread validation spans
- Use SpanGuard::captureContext() for thread-safe context propagation
from consensus thread to jtACCEPT worker thread
Spans produced: consensus.round, consensus.proposal.send,
consensus.ledger_close, consensus.establish, consensus.update_positions,
consensus.check, consensus.accept, consensus.accept.apply,
consensus.validation.send, consensus.mode_change

Use C++17 concatenated namespaces, add [[nodiscard]] to query methods,
add missing direct includes, and use pass-by-value + std::move in
NullTelemetry constructor.

Redesign SpanGuard with pimpl idiom to hide all OpenTelemetry types
from public headers. Add global Telemetry accessor so SpanGuard factory
methods work without explicit Telemetry references. Add child/linked
span creation and cross-thread context propagation. Update plan docs
to reflect macro removal in favor of SpanGuard factory pattern.
