Two conflicts, both additive.
TelemetryConfig.cpp: this branch added requireHttpsEndpoint next to
requireReadableFile; upstream added readConsensusTraceStrategy at the same spot.
Both kept.
05-configuration-reference.md: this branch added the two client-certificate rows
while upstream corrected the consensus strategy value from attribute to random.
Both kept. Also drops the stale "not yet implemented" row for
consensus_trace_strategy, which the merged table now contradicts twice over: the
option is parsed, and its value is no longer spelled attribute.
retries_remaining is stamped on the txq.accept_tx span before the
transaction is applied and before the retry counter is decremented, so a
span with txq_status="retried" always shows a non-zero count and exhaustion
shows up as txq_status="failed" with zero. The attribute comment said only
"retries left before discard", which reads as a post-decrement value and
led to a runbook query that could never match.
Also rename the drifted consensus_trace_strategy value in the plan docs
from "attribute" to "random", the spelling the parser accepts, and note that
it is experimental and not used.
Two conflicts, both additive on each side.
TelemetryConfig.cpp: include blocks only. This branch added FileUtilities.h for
the certificate readability checks; upstream added <limits> and <optional> for
the bounds parser. Both kept.
The TelemetryConfig test: this branch's mutual-TLS cases and upstream's
batch-bounds cases were added at the same positions, so the file is rebuilt from
both stages and carries all 32 tests. Two shared cases were each edited by one
side only, so the edited side wins in each: upstream asserts the batch defaults
in parse_empty_section, and this branch's parse_full_section writes a real
certificate file, which is now required since the parser opens it.
One conflict, in SpanGuard.h: this branch added struct TraceBytes and upstream
added enum SpanRole at the same position after TraceCategory. Unrelated
declarations, so both are kept.
Review feedback on the plan documents. Four kinds of error:
- Symbols that do not exist: ConsensusProposal::prevLedger_ (it is
previousLedger_), RCLConsensusAdaptor (it is RCLConsensus::Adaptor, and
startRound() is on RCLConsensus itself), and RPCHandler::doCommand (a free
function, xrpl::rpc::doCommand).
- Attribute keys: the tables used ledger_index, which no telemetry code emits.
Same concept as ledger_seq but a different referent, so the code disambiguates
by prefix: current_ledger_seq for the open ledger a transaction targeted,
ledger_seq for a closed or validated one. A note now states which is which.
- TraceQL that does not parse: span-field predicates need braces, status.code
is not an intrinsic (status = error), and avg(duration) does not take a by
clause (avg_over_time does). All five re-tested against Tempo.
- The StatsD comparison omitted the Histogram instrument, which aggregates at
the point of measure, and the when-to-use table had no row for a metric that
spans cannot afford to carry.
Nine files conflicted. Resolutions, and why:
Telemetry.cpp - upstream carried its own initMetrics(), makeResource() and
makeMetricExporter(); this branch already has an initMetrics() that builds the
exporter inline and uses makeMetricsResource(), which stamps xrpl.node.id only
when it is already known. Keeping both would have defined initMetrics() twice.
Kept this branch's, then pointed its reader at setup_.metricExportInterval and
setup_.metricExportTimeout: upstream turned those constants into [telemetry]
keys and removed the old ones, so the previous spelling no longer resolves.
OTelCollector.h - kept upstream's parameter docs. This branch's text promised
instanceId, serviceName and networkType become resource attributes; the
constructor marks all three [[maybe_unused]] and the .cpp already says they are
not read.
CollectorManager.cpp - kept upstream's comment for the same reason.
node-health.json - kept this branch's 60 panels. Upstream's only change to the
file was job_count to jobq_job_count, which this branch already had.
cfg/xrpld-example.cfg - composed. Kept this branch's warning that
service_instance_id must be set explicitly for the metrics pipeline, took
upstream's traces_endpoint rename, and removed a duplicate metrics_endpoint
entry along with the claim that metrics derive from the traces URL by rewriting
the signal path. Nothing derives it; both metric exporters read
metrics_endpoint. 17 keys, one entry each.
05-configuration-reference.md - both sides misdescribed the parser. Kept this
branch's fuller text, corrected the endpoint default to traces_endpoint, and
replaced the "resolve their URL differently" table with what the code does now.
09-data-collection-reference.md, 06-implementation-phases.md,
Phase7_taskList.md - kept this branch's versions, which drop a metric that was
never implemented, correct the state encoding to 0-6, and rename nudb_bytes to
stored_object_bytes. Re-applied upstream's rpc_requests_total fix, which taking
this side had reverted.
phase-6 corrected the Consensus Health template-variable table to name
service_instance_id, the label that dashboard actually filters on. This branch
removes that table entirely - the section is restructured around a
Prometheus-label reference and a pointer to the runbook - so the corrected row
has nothing to land in. Resolved by keeping the restructured section; phase-6's
fix remains correct for phase-6, where the table still exists.
The [telemetry] cfg block merged without conflict: the composed 14-key block
from upstream and this branch's metrics_endpoint, metric_export_interval_ms and
metric_export_timeout_ms entries coexist, 17 keys with one entry each.
The commented [telemetry] block in cfg/xrpld-example.cfg documented 8 of the 14
keys the parser accepts. Add the six that were missing - service_instance_id,
use_tls, tls_ca_cert, batch_size, batch_delay_ms and max_queue_size - each with
the unit and default read from the parser, and rename the documented endpoint
key to traces_endpoint so it matches what makeTelemetrySetup reads.
use_tls is documented for what it does rather than what its name suggests: it
gates whether tls_ca_cert reaches the exporter as a CA bundle, while the scheme
of traces_endpoint is what selects TLS. The path is not opened during parsing,
so an unreadable file surfaces as an export failure at runtime.
05-configuration-reference.md named three symbols that do not exist:
setup_Telemetry, make_Telemetry and Section::value_or. Correct them to
makeTelemetrySetup, makeTelemetry and Section::valueOr.
initMetrics() held its own copy of the suffix-swap: take tracesEndpoint,
replace a trailing /v1/traces with /v1/metrics. Any other URL shape sent
metrics to the traces path. metrics_endpoint is now a config key of its
own, so use it as given.
Application::startTelemetry() still reads the key itself for
MetricsRegistry, which builds its own exporter. Telemetry exposes no
accessor for the Setup it parsed, and re-parsing would re-run the mTLS
validation and cert-file checks at a later point in startup, so the
second read stays. The comment above it no longer claims the URL is
derived from the traces one.
Also corrects 05-configuration-reference.md: the sample configs carry
metrics_endpoint where exporter used to sit, not a comment.
Eighteen conflict regions across nine files. Resolved by asking, per
region, which side is the better final state rather than by taking a
branch wholesale.
Telemetry.cpp keeps phase-9's two resource builders. phase-8 offered a
single makeResource() with no node identity; phase-9 splits it into
makeTracerResource() and makeMetricsResource() because the metrics
provider is built in the constructor, before setNodeId() runs, so
xrpl.node.id can only be stamped unconditionally on the tracer side.
Collapsing them would have dropped that attribute, which is what keeps
per-node traces from folding into one identity.
Telemetry.h and the config test compose both sides: phase-9's nodeId
member and its assertion, plus the renamed endpoint.
xrpld-telemetry.cfg keeps phase-9's devnet identity and its
metrics_endpoint, renames the traces key, and drops exporter=otlp_http.
Nothing reads an `exporter` key on any branch in the chain: it was a real
Setup member in the first phase-1b implementation, removed when only
OTLP/HTTP was wired up, and already deleted from TESTING.md once on the
same grounds. The cfg line was the last carrier.
The docs keep phase-9's versions, which are both fuller and more
accurate: the incoming runbook listed the consensus strategy values as
"random" where the code compares against "attribute".
OTelCollector.cpp had five comment-only regions in a file phase-7 owns,
so those take the upstream side.
MetricsRegistry.h's usage example named a member that no longer exists
and the wrong arity; it now matches the real three-argument call and says
where the endpoint comes from.
Three conflicts, all composed rather than resolved by taking a side:
- TelemetryConfig.cpp: phase-6 kept networkTypeFromId file-local with
[[nodiscard]]; phase-7 had relocated it to public scope for
Application.cpp. Kept phase-7's relocation, so one definition remains.
The [[nodiscard]] survives on the declaration in Telemetry.h.
- Telemetry.cpp x2: phase-7 added getMeter overrides, phase-6 added
[[nodiscard]] to the startSpan below them. Kept both, and put
[[nodiscard]] on getMeter too.
- TESTING.md: phase-7 had the right metric name (span_calls_total, which
the spanmetrics namespace produces) but the wrong label. Its
xrpl.rpc.command appears nowhere else in the branch; the attribute is
bare `command`, which is what the dashboards query. Took phase-7's
metric with the correct label.
Both signalEndpoint call sites follow the renamed member. signalEndpoint
itself is left in place: removing it and adding metrics_endpoint is a
design change, not part of propagating a rename.
Conflict in OpenTelemetryPlan/05-configuration-reference.md: phase-5 had
corrected the enabled and use_tls types to 0 or 1 and added the
tls_client_cert and tls_client_key rows, while the incoming side renamed
the endpoint option.
Composed both — phase-5's type corrections and its two mTLS rows are
kept, with the endpoint row renamed to traces_endpoint.
Conflict in OpenTelemetryPlan/05-configuration-reference.md: phase-3 had
widened the options table and added the tx_trace_strategy and
consensus_trace_strategy rows, while the incoming side renamed the
endpoint option.
Composed both — phase-3's wider layout and its two extra rows are kept,
with the endpoint row renamed to traces_endpoint.
The [telemetry] option table documents the config key operators copy.
The key is now traces_endpoint, named for the one OTLP signal it
carries, so the old row pointed at a key the parser no longer reads.
Two prose mentions of "endpoint" further down describe the concept
rather than naming the key, and are left alone.
The configuration reference typed the five trace_* switches as bool with
default true. An xrpld config section carries integers, and these keys are
read with an integer cast, so a literal "true" fails to convert rather
than enabling the switch.
Type them as 0 or 1 with default 1, matching the other integer-valued
keys in the same table.
makeTelemetrySetup() rejects a contradictory [telemetry] mutual-TLS
setup by throwing, but it is called from ApplicationImp's
member-initializer list. A try/catch in the constructor body cannot
reach a throw from there, and nothing further up the stack caught it
either, so a config mistake reached std::terminate: the default handler
printed a terminate dump and raised SIGABRT, leaving a core file
instead of a startup error.
Catch std::exception around makeApplication() in run(), report the
reason on stderr and return -1, so the failure is a clean non-zero exit
with a message an operator can act on. Only the construction is
wrapped. setup() starts subsystems whose shutdown order is delicate and
is left outside deliberately, because unwinding a half-started
Application would skip the normal stop sequence.
Gate both validation guards on enabled. A node with telemetry switched
off previously refused to start over certificate paths that nothing
would read.
Document both throws on makeTelemetrySetup(), state in
cfg/xrpld-example.cfg and the configuration reference that a partial
mutual-TLS setup is fatal and that the checks apply only when
enabled=1, and add a runbook troubleshooting entry keyed on the two
error messages.
Tests cover both guards with the message asserted so the two are told
apart, both enabled=0 paths, and the default plaintext configuration.
The reference docs had drifted from the code in ways that break the reader
rather than merely misinform: PromQL examples that return no data, a rollback
flag that is a no-op, a sampling knob that does not exist, and two span parents
that moved. Code is treated as the truth throughout; where the code is the
defective side, the doc now records it as a known issue instead of describing
the bug as intent.
Renames the docs missed: histogram names gain the exporter's unit suffix
(ios_latency_milliseconds_bucket and four siblings), ledger_history_mismatch
gains _total, the StatsD-era quantile label gives way to le buckets,
rpc.request becomes rpc.http_request, traces_spanmetrics_calls_total becomes
span_calls_total, and the nine dotted xrpl.* span attributes are recorded as
renamed rather than left as live keys.
Re-parenting: consensus.update_positions and consensus.check are children of
consensus.establish, not of consensus.round.
Units and labels: state_accounting_*_duration is microseconds, not seconds;
cache_metrics label values are case-sensitive; object_count carries demangled
C++ type names. Nodestore read and write latency stays microseconds -- the
nanosecond accumulator change did not move the exported unit.
Adds what shipped but was undocumented: the ledger.acquire span, seven
consensus.round events, twelve span attributes, node_writes_duration_us, the
7-day validation-agreement window, the TxQ admission and reduce-relay metric
families, metrics_endpoint, and the phase-10 validation workflow.
Corrects claims that never held: 10% head sampling (it is fixed at 100%),
configurable redaction (it is unconditional), -DXRPL_ENABLE_TELEMETRY=OFF
(the flag is -Dtelemetry=OFF, default ON), FindOpenTelemetry.cmake and the
xrpl_telemetry target (neither exists), Promtail and a StatsD exporter in the
pipeline (neither exists), and Loki stream selection on job= (only
service_name is a stream label).
Phase 9 is marked complete, its provisioned alerting is attributed to the
branch that shipped it, and Phase 11 stays at zero except the one prerequisite
its code closes. Counts are reconciled repo-wide: 41 emitted span families,
15 dashboards on disk with 14 asserted, 13 alert rules in 5 groups.
Hardens the gate that let this drift through: Rule E of the naming check now
covers the reference docs, its allow-dotted marker is key-scoped and warns on
stale or empty use, a missing checked file is reported instead of silently
skipped, the test suite runs in CI, and doc paths trigger the check.
C++ and CMake changes are comment-only: three MetricsRegistry instrument names,
eight OTelCollector claims of a metric-name prefix that formatName never adds,
and the telemetry option's inverted default.
These changes were developed on the phase-10 branch but belong to content this
branch and its upstreams introduced. Carrying them on phase-10 made its PR diff
report churn in files phase-10 does not own, and left each PR claiming a scope
that did not match its contents.
Moved here from phase-10 (identical content, no functional change):
- Dashboards: all 14 existing boards plus the new log-derived-insights board.
- Docs: telemetry-runbook.md (minus the workload/benchmark sections, which
describe phase-10 tooling) and the new telemetry-glossary.md.
- Grafana Cloud + Alloy export path: collector config, compose override, the
two .env examples and alloy/config.alloy.
- Local stack: otel-collector-config.yaml gains sub-millisecond and
second-scale spanmetrics buckets, pins unit=ms, and promotes
close_time_correct; integration-test.sh and TESTING.md follow.
- Node configs: exported_instance -> service_instance_id in comments; the
mainnet sample now logs at warning to bound log volume.
- Metrics code: Telemetry.cpp builds the metrics pipeline in the constructor
via initMetrics() so the global MeterProvider is published before any
subsystem creates a beast::insight instrument, and the histogram view keeps
each instrument's own name instead of collapsing them under one series.
MetricsRegistry gains a last_close_time gauge and skips negative job-queue
durations. OTelCollector drops an unused accessor.
- Naming CI: xrpl_work_item joins EXTERNAL_INFRA_LABELS and Rule E accepts the
dotted perf-iac resource-attribute form. This must travel with the
dashboards and runbook that reference those labels, or the rules fail.
- Doxygen input glob no longer recurses dot-directories.
Sections describing phase-10 tooling stay on phase-10 and keep their
"Future Enhancement" / "Planned, not yet implemented" markers here; phase-10
removes those markers when it lands the tooling.
Telemetry must read state, never change it. Two defects here did change it,
plus three smaller correctness and privacy fixes.
doPathFind and doRipplePathFind read source_account / destination_account off
context.params to hash them into span attributes. context.params is non-const,
so those reads selected json::Value's non-const operator[], which inserts a
null for a missing key. The same object is later validated by
PathRequest::parseJson, whose first checks are isMember(source_account) and
isMember(destination_account) — so a request that omitted either field looked
present and the client received Malformed instead of Missing. Reads now go
through std::as_const, whose overload returns kNull without inserting.
PathRequest::doUpdate emitted pathfind_dest_currency as
to_string(saDstAmount_.asset()). For a non-XRP asset that renders as
"<issuer>/<currency>" with the issuer as a plaintext Base58 address, so a
plain account address reached the span pipeline even though every other
account here is hashed first. The issuer is now redacted and the currency
kept; an MPT asset renders as its issuance ID and carries no address.
PathRequestManager::updateAll created pathfind.update_all with an unscoped
SpanGuard. An unscoped guard takes the ambient span as its own parent but does
not itself become the ambient parent, so the pathfind.compute spans that
doUpdate creates never nested under it, contradicting the documented hierarchy.
It is now a scoped guard, held in std::optional because ScopedSpanGuard is
deliberately non-movable and so cannot be produced by a ternary. The skip when
there are no active subscriptions is preserved. updateAll is dispatched via
addJob and doUpdate runs synchronously, so the guard is constructed and
destroyed under the same context store, as ScopedSpanGuard requires.
The WebSocket entry point emitted the client-supplied command string directly.
That value becomes a Prometheus label, so arbitrary request input could drive
unbounded label cardinality. It is now resolved against the handler registry,
collapsing anything unrecognized to "unknown", matching what the HTTP path
already does.
Also: the pathfind.discover comment claimed future child spans could be
parented off it, which its unscoped guard cannot do — corrected to say what
would be required instead. Config-reference and task-list docs named the
parser setupTelemetry(); the API is makeTelemetrySetup().
- Add PathFinding Spans section to the runbook Span Reference and
remove the incorrect "not emitted / later-phase" annotations:
pathfind.request/compute/discover/update_all are emitted since
Phase 2 (upstream of Phase 5).
- Runbook label names use the bare spanmetrics dimensions
(command, rpc_status, local, consensus_mode); fix stale docs.
- 05-configuration-reference: note tls_client_cert/key require use_tls=1.
- TelemetryConfig: reject mTLS cert paths when use_tls=0 so telemetry
is not silently sent in plaintext.

- 05-configuration-reference: service_name now applies to metrics as well
as traces (service.name resource attribute).
- 07-observability-backends: document that collector enrichment includes
deployment-tier tagging (deployment.environment + fallback
xrpl.network.type) for filtering one Grafana stack by tier.
